Description |
Lithographed blue on white silk apron with floral border. Flap has seeing Eye. Temple design on the face of the apron with two columns and steps. Masonic symbols on the design include, square and compass, beehive, sun, quarter moon and stars ark, and plumb. By Elkana Tisdale and Consider Sterry, Norwich, Connecticut, c. 1805. Engraving on silk 18" x 16" According to "Bespangled, Painted and Embroidered" by Barbara Franco, Sterry was Master of Somerset Lodge in Norwich, CT during 1807, 1809 and 1815-1816. He was the author of several books. Elkanah Tisdale was an engraver in Norwich and engraved several plates for books and was a founder of the Hartford Graphic and Bank Note Engraving Company. Franco states that the original source for the design is an English engraving which appears on transfer-printed Liverpool pitchers |
